St. Louis Graduates offers three professional development programs in 2012-13

This year, St. Louis Graduates offers three professional development programs for those who work with low-income and first-generation students. Programs focus on developing new skills, better understanding best practices, solving problems of practice and facilitating collaboration.

 

 

All programs are offered free of charge thanks to support from The Laclede Group Foundation.

Lunch & Learns

Professional Development Institute

Learning Circles

What it is

Brown bag lunches focused on building a peer network among those who work with students every day

Workshops devoted to understanding   the theory behind best practices in postsecondary success

Small discussion groups around current professional challenges and “problems of practice”

When it meets

Tuesday lunch sessions, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dates: Oct 2, Oct 23, Nov 27, Feb 26, Apr 2

Half-day sessions (Wed or Thurs): 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dates: Oct 17, Nov 8, Feb 7, Mar 14

Friday afterschool sessions: 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Dates: Oct 19, Nov 16, Feb 15, Apr 5

Time commitment

Participants MUST commit to attending ALL sessions

Participants may attend 1 or more sessions of their choosing

Participants may attend 1 or more sessions of their choosing

Who should attend

Nonprofit youth service organization staff who:

Work directly with teens/young adults in a school or community setting with some college access/success component to work

Have 3 years or less of professional experience in the field

Are building professional peer network

Have interest in learning how to apply best practices to day-to-day work

Are looking for tangible strategies and tactics

Can commit to attending all 5 sessions

 

High school, postsecondary and nonprofit professionals who:

Work directly with teens/young adults or manage a program that does

Are currently employed in the fields of counseling, education or nonprofit college access/success or pursuing a degree in a related field

Have interest in how best practices evolved and the data that demonstrates why they are best practices

Are looking to enhance strategic thinking that will guide program planning and facilitate collaborations with like-minded organizations

High school, postsecondary and nonprofit professionals who:

Work directly with teens/young adults or manage a program that does

Have interest in working with others in thinking through strategies that apply best practice theory to the school/community setting

Are willing to commit to coming to the session equipped with a brief summary of a current professional challenge related to the theme

Are willing to be an active participant in facilitated discussion with peers about possible responses to their professional challenges and “problems of practice”
